Adam Carr is a storyteller, artist, urban explorer, community organizer and historian, a next-generation John Gurda, if you will. He is also a lifelong Milwaukeean who routinely credits Milwaukee Public Schools for his community-minded ways. His work is centered on community and exists across multiple platforms—city tours, audio work, film, journalism and art, among many other things. He helped organize events to acknowledge the 50th anniversary of the open housing marches in Milwaukee and is the author of “Explore MKE: Your Neighborhood, Our City,” a children’s book made in collaboration with third graders. It’s about how to discover the place you call home. He teamed up with artist Sonja Thomsen on the “Listening to Mitchell” project, with Reggie Baylor on the “Typeface” project and with filmmaker Wes Tank on two short films that were featured in the Milwaukee Film Festival. He was a producer at Radio Milwaukee from 2008 to 2011 and gave Mary Louise her earliest tutorials in audio work. “This is Milwaukee” takes inspiration from Adam’s singular example of civically engaged work. He has been a generous adviser to us. Adam’s pre-Covid-19 words have special resonance as our lives become increasingly local and collaborative.
