The work of Arijit Sen has been an important inspiration for “This is Milwaukee,” and Arijit is one of our project’s most essential advisers. He is an architect, scholar and historian focused on the nature of cultural landscapes. He leads deep, meaningful, community-engaged analysis of the historical, social, cultural and behavioral aspects of the built environment. He founded a field school for doctoral candidates at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee that focuses on the methods of fieldwork. An associate professor at UWM, he teaches courses in American cultural landscapes. At one of our first meetings for “This is Milwaukee,” Mary Louise and Kevin ran into @reacharijit at the Amaranth Bakery & Cafe. It seemed providential to us. He was coordinating a day of fieldwork. Based on his experiences with the “Picturing Milwaukee” project, he encouraged us to use a combination of a still image with audio, a strategy we embraced. Arijit was one of the first to embrace our new “This is Milwaukee Talking” events, online gatherings in a time of Covid-19.
