Cameron Overton asks the question, how can people fully live if they are not both safe, and safe to be who they are? As a young, Black, queer and trans leader, he answers that question with a wisdom born from lived experience and a healthy dose of faith. “That’s who I follow,” he says of Jesus, who Cameron points out loved the marginalized and called out abusive leaders. Cameron is the worship pastor at the new Zao MKE Church, the “a Jesus-rooted, justice-centered, radically-inclusive community” founded by Cameron’s spouse, the Rev. Jonah Overton. Zao is a Greek word that means “to be among the living,” and the church has been a hive of activity in support of the Black Lives Matter protesters. It is a place where water, snacks and other supplies are stored, for instance. Cameron’s worship, done virtually these days, incorporates various styles of music (including Lizzo!), with the hopes that all will feel welcome. He also is a licensed social worker with an MSW from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who specializes in alcohol and other drug addictions. He is a treatment coordinator for the Milwaukee County Adult Drug Court and on the board of the Wisconsin Association of Treatment Court Professionals. When he’s not working to break down oppressive, racist systems, he plays drums in a jazz band, too.
