Johnathon Olsen is a Milwaukee filmmaker, commercial editor, film buff and curator. His debut film, “Waltz,” was filmed when he was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and premiered at the Wisconsin Film Festival in 2009. His most recent movie, “The Gift,” a playful romance about a husband trying to write a song while his wife is away, screened at the Beloit International Film Festival. He also edited “Sijan,” a documentary about Milwaukee’s Capt. Lance Peter Sijan, who was listed as MIA during the Vietnam War and eventually named a Medal of Honor recipient. Johnathon has worked with fellow Milwaukee filmmaker Kurt Raether on projects under the guise of their Self-Destructive Films collaborative. They are currently at work on “Corridor,” written and directed by Johnathon, which takes place in a single winter night and involves a dog-loving security guard, creative placemaking, fire, death and a janitor who runs a church out of a closet, among, well, lots of other stuff. Johnathon also managed an art house theater in Duluth for a while and has created commercial work for the United Way, Harley-Davidson, Palermo’s Pizza and other companies to support his film habit. For the sake of transparency, he is also the editor on Mary Louise’s documentary, “Out of the Picture.”
