Linea Sundstrom will be the first to tell you that just about everyone is confused about voting in Wisconsin. Even those dedicated enough to volunteer their time to help others register or prepare to vote struggle to keep a grasp on the nuanced rules. In fact, Linea checks the state’s voting rules online routinely because of how often they change. That complexity is a hindrance, and Linea has organized fleets of volunteers to help Milwaukeeans get to the polls with confidence. She started out at city playgrounds, sidling up to parents to share information, before moving on to the grocery store scene, where she and her Supermarket Legends team can reach a steady stream of people. She also sets up tables at neighborhood events, conferences and festivals. Before her life as a voting advocate, she worked as an archaeologist, professor, author and editor, focusing on Native America and the archaeology and ethnohistory of the northern Great Plains. She loves how the study of dirt, archaeology, art history and landscape came together in her work, and she’s written several books and articles on Plains Indian culture, sacred sites and symbolism.
