Maletha Jones doesn’t talk about change, she makes it. She didn’t always think change was possible, but her grandchildren’s future has been a motivating factor in recent years. She is a leader with Black Leaders Organizing for Communities, or BLOC, featured earlier this year in a New Yorker article. The group attempts to build political power over the long term, rather than just at election time. Maletha had a challenging childhood in Milwaukee and has experienced loss, including a niece who was killed simply walking out of her home. She got involved in organizing during the campaign to recall then-Gov. Scott Walker in 2012, and worked for the Fight for $15 before joining BLOC. Her work involves a lot of shoe leather and deep listening. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Maletha talked to many Black residents who were deeply skeptical of Hillary Clinton and open to Donald Trump.
