Mark Powless uses his experiences to help community members, especially young people, understand their Native American identity. As a member of the Oneida Nation and the Wolf Clan, he knows firsthand what it’s like to navigate two worlds. He earned a doctorate in psychology from Marquette University and is a licensed clinical psychologist. He is director of Our Ways, the cultural curriculum at the Indian Community School in Franklin. Our Ways seeks to integrate culture and academics with the belief that students need to understand their cultural identity to thrive academically. Mark participates in Longhouse ceremonies and has worked alongside Native spiritual helpers. He has worked with community service providers and Veterans Affairs programs; lectured at the university level; and worked with schools and community groups across the state on training and education programs.
