Michael Carriere is an urban historian and punk rock musician who is an associate professor at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. It feels like we really need a hyphen in that sentence, rather than an “and,” because these things are inextricably linked. Indeed, Michael is Milwaukee’s punk rock-urban historian, and he teaches courses on social movements and the power of place at MSOE. Born in Kentucky to civil rights activists, parents who fought against racism, war and poverty, Carriere gravitated to activism early himself. Punk rock was just another form of resistance, an art form with liberation and justice at its core. Carriere is a close observer of Milwaukee, who writes regularly about the urban landscape through these lenses.
