Mikal Floyd-Pruitt sees possibility and freedom in Milwaukee, the city where he grew up, as well as its many challenges. As an artist, it’s where he wants to create. Mikal started rapping and making music when he was young, taking up the moniker MC Mikal. After studying film at Harvard University, graduating in 2006, he returned home, in part, because this is where he found collaborators. Mikal is a multidisciplinary artist. He makes paintings, sculpture, clothing and assemblages, among other things, and is a co-director of HomeWorks: Bronzeville along with artists Sara Daleiden and Vedale Hill. HomeWorks is an effort to redevelop the Bronzeville neighborhood while also providing opportunities for artists to own property and have a real stake in the communities they already bring a lot of life and value to. It’s a project to make life more generally sustainable for artists in Milwaukee, he says.
