How can a country founded on equality be so profoundly unequal? How could we comply with racial terror for so long? These are some of the questions being posed by people who are putting their bodies into the streets across the country, marching against the murder of black lives. “This is Milwaukee” is meant to inspire deeply personal reflections on democracy and citizenship, and invariably our interviews have turned again and again to issues of racism and white supremacy. It is impossible to talk about democracy without confronting these realities. Here are some of those thoughts from several “This is Milwaukee” subjects. All of the interviews we’ve done to date were conducted before the death of George Floyd, including these. We hope you’ll be inspired to explore the “This is Milwaukee” project more deeply on our website, to learn more about our subjects and to hear more of what they have to say.
